Going fishing this weekend!

July 30th, 2008 | Uncategorized

I am off for a 3 day fishing trip for small mouth bass on the New River. It is a group trip with the Southeast Fly Fishing Forum. About 40 people will be going. I will get to test out my new pontoon boat and I have been tying flies like crazy for the last few days. I have a pretty busy few weeks ahead. Look for post from the fishing trip, the July 4th wedding, the week long annual family beach vacation and a couple of random things.

Here are some of the flies that I have tied!

Cali wedding #1

July 28th, 2008 | Uncategorized

So, here are some pix from the first wedding I shot in Cali last month. This wedding was really very beautiful. The locations were so awesome. The prep was done a the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara, The ceremony was held a the Mission in Santa Barbara, and the reception was at a private estate. The bride and groom, O and E, were great to work with and were handsome and stunning.

I was second shooting for this wedding with my friend Laura who has a great collective of wedding photographers called Docuvitae. The collective shoots wedding, lifestyle and family photographs, and corporate jobs. One of the things Laura does differently than most photographers is that she still shoots film. I love shooting with her because I get to shoot film too. The first time I worked with her I was a nervous wreck waiting for the film to come back from the lab. It had been 5-6 years since I shot a lot of film and used the old EOS-1’s. I love doing it now.

Here are some of the photos that I took at the wedding. The black and white shots are on film, not conversions from a digital color shot.

Fishing round up! Woo Hoo!!

July 23rd, 2008 | Uncategorized

So fishing has slowed down. I’ve been a bit busy and the heat is awful. But we did get out to do some Smallmouth bass fishing on the New River and a trip to the Soho.

The New River is a fun river, it flows north and runs into and out of and over the NC/VA border. There are all these little dirt roads that may or may not lead to the river. The river is shallow at points and deep at others. We waded it once and rented a canoe once. Even with the canoe we ended up dragging it over the gravel often. It is a beautiful river and I am going back at the end of the month for a 3 day trip. The small mouth bass is an excellent fighting fish and a whole lot of fun to catch on the fly rod. It is mostly a top water bite which can be very exciting to see these bronze missiles coming out of the water to hit your fly. I used mostly a fly called a Gurgler. I tied mine myself. There is a basic design, but you can add most anything to it, rubber legs being the best thing you can add.

Josh and I also made a trip out to the South Holston, the Soho, in TN. man that was a blast but what a drive. It is not that far, but you have to go over like 3 mountain passes on two lane roads that are VERY twisty and take a lot of time. On the ride home we had to pull over and sleep for a couple of hours. It had been a long day. We got the and stopped in at the fly shop, picked up some split case nymphs, talked a bit with the guys there, then headed over to Blake’s, said good morning and then the 3 of us hit the water. We had a good morning catching fish despite the on and off showers. The sulfurs were slowly coming off and the fish were hitting both the nymphs and dry flys. When the electric co. started to generate we got off the river, went back to Blake’s and decided to take out the drift boat. It was my first time doing a drift and we had a blast, but the fishing was WAY off, we only caught one brown and Josh caught it. Blake was kind enough to do all the rowing. Thanks Blake! I’ve got some photos coming your way soon.

So, here are the photos:

When they generate electricity, they release water from the dam thru turbines. The water is very cool, so when it hits the hot summer air it fogs up the water. It is really cool.

Back from Cali, on to Augusta!

July 19th, 2008 | Uncategorized

Been away for a little bit. I planned on posting from California, but things didn’t go so smoothly while there. The weddings I shot went just fine, but Laura’s little girl, Willa, came down with a fever and had to spend 4 days in the hospital! Poor little peanut. She was a trooper and rebounded well, but there were some lingering questions and many tests were run. It was determined that there was a kidney issue and she would need to be operated on. Well the operation was last Wednesday and she is all better! The Dr. has given her a clean bill. I’m not sure exactly what was done, but it was done well! I am so relieved, and happy for Daniel and Laura. Here is a snapshot of the happy family when we stopped for breakfast after the first wedding we did on June 28th, before WIlla got her fever. We stopped in the town of Summerland, CA, just south of Santa Barbara, on the coast. It was a lovely little town and the breakfast was awesome!

I got back from Cali on the 5th after shooting a wedding on the 4th, spent a week helping my mom get her website ready, which should launch soon, July 29th is the target day. Then I headed off to Augusta for the start of the archiving project at ANGC. Been a busy few weeks and on top of it, I tweaked a knee last week and had to have it drained, 40cc of fluid was taken out of it. Fun stuff.

So stay tuned for regular postings to begin again, with a round up of a couple of smallmouth bass fishing trips, the two weddings, and a children’s shoot with my 2 nieces.
