Family photos

One of the advantages of having an uncle who is a professional photographer is the awesome family portraits. My brother and sister have been bugging me for about a year to take some new photographs of my nephew and nieces. It had been a while since I had done it. I have been photographing these kids since they were a month old and usually at least once a year since then. The last couple of years have been pretty busy for me and it has been harder to schedule a time when we could all get together. Well this year we made time. We decided to bring out some lights and have a full on fun shoot, a fake fashion shoot, sort of. My nephew, of course, didn’t really dig the fashion part of the shoot. He wanted to show off his camo gear, he is quite a hunter already at 11. Really. Oh, and he is a Red belt in karate.

Goodbye 2011! Bring it on 2012!

I have always been of the mind that your cell phone is NOT a camera. I still believe that. I hate seeing folks using their phones to capture precious moments, knowing that those photos are not of great quality and will probably never even get downloaded. But, I also believe that the best camera you have is the one that is with you. Having said that, I am guilty of using my Iphone as a camera. I have the newest 4s, which is about the best you can get with your phone and this year I found myself using it quite a bit. I still carry my big camera most of the time and many of the photos that I take with the Iphone, I also take with the 5dMII. I have been quite taken with the Instagram app. It is not the filters that I love, it is the sharing capabilities. I love being able to tweet, post to my blog or post to my facebook page a photo  of what is happening right now. Many times the photo says a whole lot more than I could. It reaches a larger audience and most of my friends and followers love it. I have been told more than a few times that people really appreciated following Lesley and I on our trip to Italy. I highly recommend Instagram and its community, you can find and follow me here – followgram.me/ptpix

Wedding cakes

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and Hanukkah and is gearing up for New Years. This week in between is one of my favorite times of the year. When I worked in newspapers, I always took this week off. I love just hanging out, doing a little bit of work, going out to lunch, taking a nap, fixing some stuff, going fishing, sleeping in or catching a movie or two. It just feels like the pressure is off for the week, of course it comes back with a vengeance on Jan 2d! Have a great in between week everyone!

A couple of months ago, I shot this gig for Charlotte Weddings. It was a lot of fun and I think the photos came out terrific, although the ‘Kiss’ cake kinda freaks me out. Lindsay did an excellent job with the layout ( I love seeing my images full page! ). These are Iphone shots of the pages in the magazine at Barnes and Nobles, I have not received my copies yet.

The winner of the Next Iron Chef is ……..

Chef Geoffrey Zakarian!

For a Food Network recap click here

In case your wondering why I posted this, let me remind you that I worked with Chef Zakarian for the photos of one of his restaurants, The National, for its website. The website was produced by a design and branding company called Love and War. They won a James Beard Award for the National website and graphics this year! Using my photos! Chef was pleasant to work with, and I enjoyed working with him. His restaurants, The National and The Lambs Club, both in NYC, are really awesome, and I urge you to try them both!

Congrats, Chef! You worked very hard for this and deserve the win!

Here are a couple of photos from our shoot.

A beautiful day!

It’s been crazy busy around here since we got back from Italy. I’ll get back to those photos later this week.

Last Thursday evening I found myself standing on a dock on Bowens Island outside of Charleston, SC. I was helping a friend shoot a wedding and the couple were having their rehearsal dinner at the Bowens Island Restaurant. Buckets upon bucketful of oysters and frogmore stew were laid out for the guests who really enjoyed the feast. I was there early to capture the ambience and WOW, what a great sunset that evening. I just stood out there and took picture after picture after picture. I shot the guests arriving and the early part of the dinner, then my friend took over and I headed out for a late dinner at Husk.

Here are some photos of that magnificent sunset.

Italy. Venice.

We landed in Rome and 60 minutes later we were on the train to Venice. Having only slept for about an hour on the plane, we both spent the ride drifting in and out of sleep. The Venice train station is kinda awesome. You arrive and get off the train and it looks like most any other train station, until you walk out the doors. Then you see it, The Grand Canal. And boats. Lots of boats. We stayed at an awesome B&B, Ca Bonvicini. We really enjoyed our stay here. Had some great meals, saw some art, some palaces, some churches, a market or two, walked all over, visited the Jewish Ghetto, the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, visited Murano, saw some glass being blown, bought some street art, went to the top of a tower, drank at cafes, rode in a gondola, a water taxi and a vappereto. Even though Venice is expensive and a bit touristy, I think we would go back if we had the chance.

Here are some photos!

Awesome shots Peter! Such a different way of life….and you captured it so well!

  2. Marinella says:

I’m so impressed by the photos of Venice. Whenever I’ve been there, I’ve found it so hard to photograph without the pictures just looking like mediocre postcards. But your pictures capture both the beauty of the place and the atmosphere. I love the facades in the narrow streets and the dark and light on the water of the canals. Looking forward to seeing the photos from the rest of the trip!

Thanks Marinella! We left for a family visit right after we got back and are just now getting back to normal! I’ll have more photos up this week. Tell everyone we say hello!

Last day in Italy and the last day of Berlusconi

We spent our last day in Italy running around like tourists. Took a great tour of the Colosseum and the surrounding areas with Context tours. I would highly recommend them for any tour in a major city. After lunch we met up with Lesley’s friend from grad school Jessica and wandered around the city as they caught up. Jessica has lived in Rome for over ten years and it was great to hear about her life here. We wandered over to the Fondazione Roma Museo and caught a Georgia O’Keefe retrospective. It was awesome to see her work again and the Museo did a great job with the exhibit. After we left the museo, we wandered down the street and encountered a huge crowd. Jessica realized that we were right in front of the Palazzo Chigi, Italy’s Prime Ministry, and it was the last night of Silvio Berlusconi as Prime Minister. The crowds were singing and there was music playing and chanting and some arguing. I waded my way into the crowd for a few moments and took the photo below, my little interaction with Italian history!

We leave in the morning and will be sad to leave Italy, but happy to be heading to our home.
