Springtime trout fishing

Headed up to the Mitchell River today, up near Elkin, NC. The day was warm, overcast and threatening rain all afternoon. It held off. Fishing was a bit slow, but a great day on the river. Caught 3 brook trout, 2 rainbows, including this big fat one. That is the biggest trout I have caught so far. It was so fat, I couldn’t even get both hands around it! Not sure how long it is, but I would guess 20 inches or so, maybe more. The snake was in a tree and I didn’t see it until I had pulled down the branch to unhook a fly and there it was. Guess it is warm enough for these guys to be awake now. Here are the totals so far –

Fish Totals as of 5.03.08
Species and totals for 2008
Brook Trout – 23?
Native Wild Brook trout – 15?
Rainbow Trout – 17?
Brown Trout – 8?
Largemouth Bass – 20?
Sunfish – 68?
Black Crappie – 7

and here are the pix from today.
